On May 26th 2013 the Polish Association of Sommeliers organized the prestigious Polish Sommelier Championships for the 13th time. Andrzej Strzelczyk, representing La Rotisserie restaurant in Mamaison Hotel Le Regina Warsaw, repeated his great success from 2012 and won the first place.

The organizers prepared many interesting tasks for the final round including: blind test of five alcohols, magnum champagne bottle to be poured into 16 glasses and professional conversation with the Chef. The audience enjoyed the show by all three finalists but their main prize went to Andrzej Strzelczyk for the second time in a row.

Each year the championship has the same agenda: first day of theoretical tests and second day of practical challenges. Saturday qualification session included test on wine knowledge and several special tasks, such as wine degustation and food pairing ( grilled asparagus with ham ), blind test, white wine decanting (burgund) and several questions regarding cuisine. Only three participants remain in competition after the first day.

Sunday finale was fun to watch for the audience – they could see decanting wine for a table of five while serving sparkling wine to another, unexpected party of guests, as well as choosing wine for the dishes described by the Chef. Other tasks included tasting of red and white wines, unexpectedly one of them was sparkling orange wine, and the famous blind test of five different spirits. The final tasks were a blitz quiz and serving out a magnum bottle of Champagne to 16 glasses.

Shortly after the final round the Sommelier Champion of Poland 2013 said: „It is a great feeling to win for the second time in a row. I am also extremely happy to see that the wine culture involves more and more people each year and we can observe a huge change of our culinary habits and preferences”. Andrzej has been at Le Regina for more than six years now, before he used to work at the Bristol hotel. He has accomplished with a distinction an international Wine and Spirit Education Trust course (WSET).

He used to be a member of jury during: Coupe Georges Baptiste, International Wine and Spirits Competition and EnoExpo. In 2012 he has started a wine course at the Weinakademie Österreich in Rust.

Polish sommeliers Association brings together almost 50 members who dedicate themselves to the passion and work towards education, improving skills and creating a culture of wine in Poland. The organization was founded in 2000 and is a member of L’Association Internationale de la Sommelliere – ASI.
